I think it's high time I started a cookbook thread. I don't really use cookbooks at home nearly as much as some home cooks I know, as I tend to find most comfort in cookbooks that veer closer to being a culinary textbook.

This thread is for people to talk about and rave about a favorite cookbook of theirs, something they've got on their shelf, or perhaps link to a cookbook review.

Here are a couple of reviews for Michael Ruhlman's latest book, Ratio
Everyday Cooking Is As Easy As 3:2:1

The Math In Every Bowl

Quote:
In the end, as I read the start of the last chapter's paragraph, the concept of "preaching to the choir" came to mind. Yes, ratios can liberate home cooks, as Ruhlman wrote. But only those who were free spirits to begin with.

Not quite a cookbook, but when you talk about raising your own pigs and chickens, you can bet it's not as pets.

"Poultry, Pigs, and Parenting"

The author will be at Powells Books this Thursday.

Matthew Amster-Burton is currently touring for his book The Hungry Monkey, which is all about how a parent can raise a child to be an adventurous eater.

Here's a link to his blog post that has he and his adorable daughter Iris demonstrating on some of the recipes on a local CBS station.

Only the cuteness of his daughter tempered my frustration that he beat me to the punch on the book. Thanks for the link, I'd never run across his blog before.

Michelin-starred Chef David Thompson's book, simply titled Thai Food, is widely considered the best book on the subject. Here's an article about watching the chef at work.

Quote:
Over the next two afternoons Thompson cooked soups, curries, stir-fry, and relishes, each one more vibrant than the next. He has a child-like enthusiasm when it comes to sharing the treasures he discovers in Thailand's markets--and I was all too happy to oblige.

Referring to a cookbook is sometimes done by beginners. However, it helped to check recipes that are not on the Internet. A simple to authentic recipes are written on it so looking for a cookbook is enjoyable. Specially when you've got your dish perfectly as what the book says. Wink
