Had lunch today with Jeff as well as Alicia of bread-and-honey at Evoe. The sun was beaming right into the main table, but by the time 1:30pm rolled around, no longer were the rays directly beaming into the room, and it became very comfortable. We split the plates, placing two orders of the splendid deviled eggs, an order of the fennel, artichoke and guanciale salad, some oysters, the marcona almonds, and splitting a croque madame.

Everything was delicious, and the croque madame was particularly noteworthy. The almonds were also the best I'd had in a long time, well seasoned and surprisingly chewable, which I think is just me being used to particularly "tough" almonds. On ordering the fennel salad, Kevin (I believe) went into Pastaworks and came back seconds later with a bulb of fennel and an artichoke in hand.

I forgot also, props to Jeff for the manzanilla port sherry.

If you manage to make it out to Evoe, be sure to check out the homegrown chanterelles. They've got a loaf of bread that has somehow been inoculated and is growing some really gorgeous mushrooms.

I noticed the chanterelle patch was no longer there. I wonder how it turned out...

HoldtheBeans and I were perusing Hawthorne yesterday after a sun filled run downtown and decided to tuck into Pastaworks. After poking around a bit we decided to grab a nibble at Evoe.

Charcuterie plate is an unmitigated WIN. Really, probably the most interesting, well balanced plates in town. Great variety and contrasts between sweet, sour, spicy, fatty, sour.....standouts being the pickled plums, Salumi's fennel salami, the Lardo, and rabbit mousse.

I asked Kevin about that last Sunday and he said that they didn't have any flavor so he wasn't able to use them.

And it's not just the food that Kevin Gibson conjures from simple, seasonal ingredients that makes it the best in town, but also its unassuming simplicity and incredible value. The day's offerings are written on tall blackboards posted high on the walls, with Kevin basically standing at the wooden table and whipping out the smartest, most beautiful food you'll find anywhere.
